17-4PH (1.4542) is a precipitation-hardenable stainless steel. There are various heat treatment processes available to 17-4PH and, depending on the process used, a maximum hardness of 44HRC can be achieved. It combines high strength and toughness with excellent corrosion resistance and good machinability.

Material can be certified to ASTM F899 making it suitable for a wide range of surgical instruments, cutting tools, rasps, medical screwdrivers and dental instruments such as burs. It is suitable for both polishing and magetising and shows good weldability with all electric welding methods.

Heat Treatment

Solution Heat Treatment : 1900 ̊F (+/-25 ̊F) followed by water, oil or air cool (time comensurate with the size of the part)

Precipitation Treatment : Temperature 900 – 1150̊F (depending on the H temper required), holding for 4 hours, followed by air cool
